Car will not start? Here is what to check first

If the car will not start, notice what sound it makes when you turn the key. That sound tells the mechanic most of the story before they arrive.

Listen to the sound

Turn the key and pay attention. Fast clicking, like a machine gun, almost always means a low battery. No dash lights at all can mean a dead battery or a loose terminal. If the engine cranks normally but will not fire, look at fuel or ignition. One loud click and then nothing can point to the starter.

Check the easy things

Look at the battery terminals. White or green crust, or a terminal that moves by hand, can be enough to stop a start. Make sure the car is in Park or neutral. Glance at the fuel gauge. It sounds obvious, and it happens a lot.

What to tell the mechanic

Give the year, make and model. Describe the sound and when it started. Say whether the lights come on. Say where the car is and whether there is room to work beside it. With that, the mechanic knows which parts to bring and does not make two trips.

When you do need a tow

If there is smoke, a burning smell, a big oil leak or a loud metal bang before it died, do not try to start it again. Have it looked at first. A mobile mechanic can tell you whether it can be fixed on the spot or should go to a shop.

Common questions

Can a mobile mechanic replace the battery?

Yes. It is one of the most common jobs. Ask whether they bring the battery or you buy it.

Can I jump it myself?

Yes, with cables and a second car, in the right order. If it fails again the next day, the battery or the alternator needs a check.

Will they charge for the trip if they cannot fix it?

Many charge for the visit. Ask the visit cost before they head out.
